Each month, the NUMC Outreach Team chooses an organization or initiative to support through monetary donations collected weekly. We call this our Mission of the Month. At times, you may hear these missions referred to as the “Advance Specials,” which is the historical term in our church. We use them interchangeably, so whichever term you use will be understood.
GET INVOLVED
Through the Mission of the Month, our Outreach Team highlights and partners with ministries locally, nationally, and internationally to strengthen their work growing God’s kingdom. Our partnerships gained in 2023 were Lahaina UMC in Maui, Family Promise of Bucks County, The Syrian American Medical Association, A Woman’s Place, the Wrightstown Food Pantry, and much more.
September Mission of the Month:
The Mission of the Month (Advance) for September is The Independence Fund, providing programs and services to disabled military veterans who served in combat. Their mobility program empowers amputees to regain their mobility and independence by using Trackchairs, designed to navigate snow, mud, and dirt. These veterans are able to reenter the outdoors and engage in the activities they enjoy.
CEO Sarah Verardo, a member of Weddington Methodist Church in North Carolina, saw firsthand what a difference Trackchairs could make. Her husband Michael was severely injured when he stepped on an IED while serving in Afghanistan in 2010, losing one of his legs, most of his one arm, and suffering other injuries. He underwent over 100 surgeries. He recently passed away from his injuries at age 40.
The Independence Fund also provides suicide prevention counseling and many other services needed by disabled veterans.
If you would like to help The Independence Fund, please use one of the blue Advance offering envelopes in the pews and put it in the offering plate. You can also send a check to Newtown UMC, 35 Liberty Street, Newtown, PA 18940. Please mark your check “Advance for September.”
